Productivity, Attention, and International Influence: Meeting with Prof. Bonk
I met Prof. Bonk at the Starbucks near the IU Sample Gates on a Sunday noon. Despite having exchanged emails before, meeting one of IU’s most productive scholars in person was an experience worth noting.
With 20 books, 161 journal articles, and various other publications and collaborative works totaling over 400 pieces, his work has been translated into Chinese, Korean, and even Arabic.
His detailed recollection of lectures given in dozens of countries, totaling nearly 1,900 talks, reminded me of my rigorous endeavors. It’s impressive!
For me, academia is another aspect of my identity, and I might not necessarily spend much time writing papers anymore (because it’s quite challenging, haha). But facing such a productive figure as Prof. Bonk, I naturally sought some tips on maintaining high efficiency. Everyone has only 24 hours; how to allocate time, focus, and produce effectively is worth learning.
Key takeaways include discipline, organization of daily work, managing time investment, building connections, and having an efficient team.
Discipline Equals Productivity:
Working until 3-4 AM 7 days a week, timing work, daily running, and keeping a record of observations. This routine lifestyle, as described by Prof. Bonk, felt very familiar and akin to my own practices, though Prof. Bonk might be an enhanced version of such discipline.
Meticulous Preparation:
In our first meeting, I prepared a presentation about myself (translated into English for a more comfortable delivery on an iPad). Prof. Bonk, after my presentation, introduced his “pile” of authored or co-authored books and discussed the key points and his connection with different authors, showing great preparation.
English and International Influence:
Prof. Bonk’s discipline and dedication, along with his international influence in his field, offer much to learn. Publishing works and academic papers primarily in English expands global influence, inspiring me to consider translating my works on teaching techniques, gamification in education, and presentation skills into English to establish broader international impact.
Meeting Prof. Bonk reaffirmed the secrets to productivity are universal; investing time and effort creates higher value, and it’s worth considering how to translate current works into English for greater international influence. It was a highly rewarding Coffee time, and even in our photo session, Prof. Bonk was mindful of the lighting and angles, making the experience feel familiar and enjoyable.
